A general diary (G.D.)

General Diary:

⚠️

Difference between G.D. and F.I.R.

General Diary (G.D.)

  • For non-cognizable offenses or lost property
  • Police cannot arrest without warrant
  • Internal police record - no copy provided
  • Used for documentation purposes
  • No formal investigation required
  • Examples: Lost documents, mobile, simple disputes

First Information Report (F.I.R.)

  • For cognizable offenses (serious crimes)
  • Police can arrest without warrant
  • Free copy provided to complainant
  • Mandatory investigation begins
  • Formal criminal proceedings initiated
  • Examples: Theft, fraud, assault, serious crimes

Note: If a non-cognizable offense is reported, police will register it as G.D. If the offense is cognizable, police must register it as F.I.R. under Section 154 of CrPC. The choice between G.D. and F.I.R. depends on the nature and severity of the offense.

Important Points about General Diary

📋

No Copy Provided

Unlike F.I.R., police do not provide a copy of G.D. entry. You should note down the G.D. number for your records.

📁

Internal Record

G.D. is maintained as an internal record of the police station for administrative and documentation purposes.

🔍

No Investigation

Police are not legally bound to investigate G.D. entries, but may take action if they find it necessary.

Useful for Records

G.D. serves as official documentation that can be used for insurance claims, duplicate document issuance, or future legal proceedings.

🔄

Can Convert to F.I.R.

If police discover during investigation that the offense is cognizable, G.D. can be converted to F.I.R.

Time Limit

There is no specific time limit for filing G.D., but it's advisable to file as soon as possible after the incident.
